NEUROLOGICAL CONDITIONS
Epilepsy / Convulsion / Seizures
Brief recurrent disorder of cerebral function that is usually associated with disturbance of consiousness and accompanied by sudden, excessive electrical discharge of cerebral neurones. EEG is of high voltage relative to the background and results from an unpgysiological, synchronous discharge of an agrregation of neurons.
Clinically, epilepsy is defined as a condition characterised by recurrent (two or more) unprovoked seizures.
Causes
Epilepsy is due to a population of abnormal hyperexcitable neurons. Such neurons are subject to excitatory and inhibitory influences from other sources. Excitatory transmitters depolarise and inhibitory transmitters hyperpolarise the neuronal membrane. The discharge is governed by the balance betwenn the two opposing factors.
Acetylcholine is the excitatory transmitter.
GABA is the inhibitory transmitter.
Epilepsies may be primary or secondary (symptomatic).
Symptoms
Seizure symptoms vary depending on the type of seizure. Because epilepsy is caused by certain activity in the brain, seizures can affect any brain process. Seizure symptoms may include:
Temporary confusion.
Astaring spell.
Stiff muscles.
Uncontrollable jerking movements of the arms and legs.
Loss of consciousness.
Psychological symptoms such as fear, anxiety or deja vu.
Sometimes people with epilepsy may have changes in their behavior. They also may have symptoms of psychosis.
Most people with epilepsy tend to have the same type of seizure each time. Symptoms are usually similar from episode to episode.
Treatments
For chronic cases of epilepsy or convulsion proper long term medical management is necessary. Homeopathy being a medicine which acts well on deep seated diseases works in this condition by helping the cerebral neurons to recover and controls the electrical discharge by these cells. The recurrent tendency of convulsion and also its sensitivity towards its triggering factors is reduced by Homoeopathy. Homeopathy has no side effects even if medicines are continued for long time so it’s a suitable choice of treatment.
Few homeopathy medicines which help in such cases are cuprum metallicum, baryta carbonica, stramonium etc.
General measures: tide over the stigma by proper explanation to patients and relatives, no swimming, adopt a profession which neither patient nor society is put in risk, adequate sleep, avoid hyperpyrexia or emotional disturbances.
